Budapest with kids – fun for everyone

The best activities for children

Are you thinking about visiting Budapest with your kids? That’s a great idea! Because the city is not only nice for grown ups, also your children will have loads of fun in the Hungarian Capital. On this page you will find the best activities for children in Budapest. And who knows: you might find them entertaining too.

Take the Children’s railway in Budapest

The children’s railway in Budapest is fun for the whole family. It’s one of the most unique attractions in the Hungarian capital: a railway completely run by children (off course under the supervision of adults). You ride a real train and the children sell and check the tickets, inform everybody on board and they manage the traffic.

There are seven stops and the complete circle takes about 40 to 50 minutes. It’s not only a nice route through the forest, but there are also other activities for children close by. For example: if you get off at Janos Hégy station to climb the Erzsebet tower at the highest point of the city. And if you walk a bit further there is chairlift. There are also playgrounds close to Szechenyi-hegy, Szepjuhaszne and Huvosvolgy Station.

Visit the Budapest zoo

Just like almost any other big city Budapest has a zoo. And again it’s a perfect trip for the entire family. The zoo is centrally located in the City Parc, which you can find at the end of Andrassy Boulevard. What makes this zoo particularly interesting for adults too is the beautiful architecture: it’s designed in art nouveau style. It’s also one of the oldest in the world since it celebrated its 150 years anniversary in 2016. You will find all sorts of wild cats, elephants, monkeys a crocodile and much more species in the Budapest zoo.

Take a cruise on the Danube

If you go to Budapest with kids – and also if you don’t go with kids – it’s strongly recommended to take a cruise on the Danube. From here you have a great view on the city you will all enjoy. Maybe if the kids are really small it’s not too nice for them, but you can bring them some toys or a book so they can also entertain themselves on the water. Once they get a bit older they will enjoy the lovely ride on the boat for sure. You can also hop off on Margaret Island where there are lots of nice things to do for kids. Later you can hop on the boat again to return to the same spot where you got in the boat.

Margaret island is a green gem in the city. It’s a small island which can be reached by a bridge. It’s a nice place for a picnic or a run, but there also a great many things to do for your children. There is a small zoo where kids can make a short ride on a pony and feed deers. There is also a musical fountain on this little island, you can watch the view from the water tower and there is a playground.

Palatinus bath

In most thermal baths in Budapest it’s not allowed to bring small kids. But there is a great solution to this problem: Palatinus bath. It’s a big swimming pool with wild water streams, slides and multiple pools to choose from. This will guarantee your kids a lot of fun. And also for grown ups it’s a nice place to hang out, especially on warm summer day.
