The best activities for children
Are you thinking about visiting Budapest with your kids? That’s a great idea! Because the city is not only nice for grown ups, also your children will have loads of fun in the Hungarian Capital. On this page you will find the best activities for children in Budapest. And who knows: you might find them entertaining too.
Take the Children’s railway in Budapest
The children’s railway in Budapest is fun for the whole family. It’s one of the most unique attractions in the Hungarian capital: a railway completely run by children (off course under the supervision of adults). You ride a real train and the children sell and check the tickets, inform everybody on board and they manage the traffic.
There are seven stops and the complete circle takes about 40 to 50 minutes. It’s not only a nice route through the forest, but there are also other activities for children close by. For example: if you get off at Janos Hégy station to climb the Erzsebet tower at the highest point of the city. And if you walk a bit further there is chairlift. There are also playgrounds close to Szechenyi-hegy, Szepjuhaszne and Huvosvolgy Station.
Visit the Budapest zoo
Just like almost any other big city Budapest has a zoo. And again it’s a perfect trip for the entire family. The zoo is centrally located in the City Parc, which you can find at the end of Andrassy Boulevard. What makes this zoo particularly interesting for adults too is the beautiful architecture: it’s designed in art nouveau style. It’s also one of the oldest in the world since it celebrated its 150 years anniversary in 2016. You will find all sorts of wild cats, elephants, monkeys a crocodile and much more species in the Budapest zoo.
Go see one of the biggest miniature exhibitions in the world
In Miniversum in Budapest you find one of the biggest miniature exhibitions in the world. There are 1200 little cars and 100 modeltrains driving around in this unique miniature world. Some of the must see Budapest attractions are completely rebuild and also here you get to see what the country side of Hungary looks like. Children can control parts of the traffic and bring to life all sorts of actions, motion, sound and light effects.
Take a cruise on the Danube
If you go to Budapest with kids – and also if you don’t go with kids – it’s strongly recommended to take a cruise on the Danube. From here you have a great view on the city you will all enjoy. Maybe if the kids are really small it’s not too nice for them, but you can bring them some toys or a book so they can also entertain themselves on the water. Once they get a bit older they will enjoy the lovely ride on the boat for sure. You can also hop off on Margaret Island where there are lots of nice things to do for kids. Later you can hop on the boat again to return to the same spot where you got in the boat.
Hop on Hop off bus
With kids the hop on hop off bus is a really convenient way to transport yourself through Budapest. It will bring you from highlight to highlight without having to look where to go exactly. Your kids will enjoy it since you don’t have to carry around the whole city. It’s also convenient for strollers. And if you like you can also ask your kids to make a list with the stops they would like to get off.
Visit Margaret Island
Margaret island is a green gem in the city. It’s a small island which can be reached by a bridge. It’s a nice place for a picnic or a run, but there also a great many things to do for your children. There is a small zoo where kids can make a short ride on a pony and feed deers. There is also a musical fountain on this little island, you can watch the view from the water tower and there is a playground.
In most thermal baths in Budapest it’s not allowed to bring small kids. But there is a great solution to this problem: Palatinus bath. It’s a big swimming pool with wild water streams, slides and multiple pools to choose from. This will guarantee your kids a lot of fun. And also for grown ups it’s a nice place to hang out, especially on warm summer day.
You can easily spend a day in the Science Museum in Budapest. It’s such a big place with a lot of fun things to do. There are 5D and even 9D movies to watch, over 250 game to play and you can break out of an escape room and experience physical phenomena. For different there are different routes. So all kids can do whatever suits them best. Looking for a hotel?
Check out my two personal favourites: TG Design suites Aparthotel & Hotel Rum (which is Buda-side of the city). Other hotels which are popular, have good ratings and are located very well are Roombach Hotel and AnVa House.
