History New York Cafe
New York Cafe opened its on doors at the end of the 19th century; on the 23rd of October 1894 to be precise. Rapidly it turned into one of the most famous coffee-houses of the city. It was a meeting spot for the artistic and intellectual community in Budapest. The main topic of discussion was politics and cultural business.
After World War II the grandeur of New York Cafe had completely vanished. And it was no longer a coffee-house. Now it housed a sports shop. So instead of people drinking a coffee over a good discussion people now showed up to buy their sport outfits. In 1954 the doors of cafe reopened, now under the little creative name Hungaria.
It took until 2006 for New York Cafe to open its doors again. And finally the coffee-house got its splendour back. So much even that it has been ranked as the ‘Most Beautiful Coffee House in the World’.
What you should know when visiting New York Cafe
If you want to visit this gorgeous coffee-house, you will have to bring a portion of patience along with you. It’s a touristy place and a lot of people want to indulge themselves in the pomp and circumstance of this special place. Most of the times you have to wait in line in order to get a reservation. The waiting time can be around 20 to 30 minutes. But there is so much to see that you will not get bored waiting to be seated.
If you arrive right after opening time (8AM) most probably you don’t have to wait. And if your smart you can also make a reservation on forehand. You can do that by filling in this form on their website.
